We love a band that polarises opinion, there's nothing quite like it. And folks definitely have opinions on Young Rebel Set. NME loves them - no, come back! - but the quality press is, unusually, split down the middle. One half is disturbed that a seven-piece from Teeside can produce such blue-collar authenticity (see Springsteen, The Hold Steady) and heartstring-tugging tunes like If I Was and Won't Get Again. The other miserable lot clinging to the eighties are still mourning The Clash and Dexys, carefully cataloguing their Bruno Brookes Chart Show cassettes. Get over yourselves and get behind a great new band. What's wrong with singing about life and love, hard luck and romance against the odds?
