It ain't easy to fuse jump blues with post-punk and a whole lot of other stuff. So let's start with jump blues ... re-labelled "rock'n'roll" in the 50s evolving from big bands (only now with a small horn section) and an extension of boogie-woogie, touched on by 80s artists most notably Joe Jackson, but it's only a small part of the story. Brighton's Sweet Sweet Lies have somehow fused it with folk, bluegrass and post punk. Think Johnny Cash meets Nick Cave, Kurt Weil and Sailor. Oh, and Bryan Ferry. Vocalist Dominic Von Trapp's voice is crooner-smooth and haunting with witty lyrics loaded with pathos. Dark, rustic and angry; a refreshing palate of soft melodies that sound easier than they look: Witty, debonair and daring.
