Impassioned techno rage and irresistible aggressive Teutonic beats! They sounded so authentic that it's often assumed that Nitzer Ebb came from the German techno scene but Douglas McCarthy, Vaughn 'Bon' Harris and David Gooday were all from Chelmsford. No matter, debut album That Total Age made them leading exponents of Hard Beat / EBM (Electronic Body Music), distilling other genres to create their own. Powerful rhythm, minimal-sequenced hooklines and fierce, chanted lyrics ... even a remix by grandfather of funk, George Clinton, hit No 2 in the US charts. From a shared interest in witchcraft and inspiration from Killing Joke and Bauhaus to analogue trickery, minimal song structures, sledgehammer drums and International Funk Aggression. End result: sweaty dancefloors worldwide. Not a bad road.
