Chumbawamba. The name itself means nothing, it's gibberish, let's get that out of the way. But gibberish is far from what the always-evolving Leeds-based (now) five-piece are about. From punk to dance to acapella to chart-pop to acoustic, always responding to changing culture and with ever-more chaotic, unpredictable gigs becoming unedited chat shows with a soundtrack of folk, pop and harmonies. With an irreverent attitude to authority and a willingness to tackle any subject from domestic violence to religion, consumerism to war, Chumbawamba have spent their adult lives fashioning something weird, funny, eccentric and challenging from a seven-note Do-re-mi of possibilities. Which is a great link to tell you their new album, ABCDEFG, is out in March ... and always diverse and challenging whether poking at Metallica, Stalin and the iPod; celebrating teenage discovery of music under-the-pillow, or telling of the concentration camp survivor who disrupted the first playing of Wagner in Israel by swinging a football rattle. Wonderful stuff. The boy bands have NOT won. Please note this is a standing show although there is seating at the rear of the venue.
