San Francisco may never again re-capture the heights of the ‘60s, when Haight-Ashbury was the centre of global counterculture, but it's not going to give up trying. Rupa And The April Fishes are the latest category-defying, pan-everything, all-musical-points-of-the-compass outfit to come from melting-pot city. Blending French cafe music, Latin rhythm, a vintage cabaret vibe with world influences; gently swaying accordion mingles with double bass, brass and percussion. It positively crackles with energy and sex, with hints of tango and Roma. You might catch echoes of DeVotchKa, The Tiger Lillies or Gogol Bordello. Amélie meets Pedro Almodovar meets Latcho Drom meets Do the Right Thing. Set in India and Berkeley. Amazing.
