THE definitive British indie rock band of the '80s with chiming, melodic three-minute pop singles defined by Morrissey's keening, self-absorbed crooning of forlorn, romantic poetry a la Oscar Wilde. Perfectly complimented by guitarist Johnny Marr's elegant and meticulously layered guitar tracks, The Smiths provided the blueprint for British guitar rock in the following decade. From 1983 debut single Hand In Glove to 1987's Shoplifters of the World and Sheila Take A Bow, the Thatcher-trashing, gladioli-loving champion of vegetarians we know as Mozzer changed modern music for ever. Taking their name from the scratching on a Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now 7" single, The Smiths Indeed promise an entire set - no Morrissey solo work - throwing on the costumes and quaffing the hair for an authentic 1980s experience. They put an end to synth-powered New Wave and invented indie. Nothing wrong with that!
