Forget big in Japan, Tokyo-based English/Kiwi/Belgian/Swede indie outfit The Watanabes are giving York a taste of their international, whimsical, melodic pop. And don't be fooled by their Japanese home - they're as much Smiths and Belle & Sebastian as they are sushi, bringing together vistas of home with references to Japanese cooking, language problems and getting used to a different kind of toilet. Joining them on their European tour are fellow bands from the Favourite Tree Records label: Sheffield's Take To The Seas (a Tellison-sized slice of clever-rock) and Towns And Houses (melancholy pop recording terrible times, awful people and broken relationships with a cheery tune) from fair York. One would be good, but for one night only The Duchess gets all three. It's toe-tapping, edgy, poppy indie-ness galore.
